Fresh Bakes, Family Traditions
Looking for a bakery in Abbotsford that can handle both your weeknight sandwiches and your weekend pav bhaji? At Manohar Vegetarian Bakery Cedar Lane, we bake a full range of breads and buns, from daily sandwich staples to traditional vegetarian Indian favorites. You can find the right loaf or bun for any meal in one stop.
Our story started in Ferozepur, Punjab. Shri Harichand Gulati opened the bakery there and named it after his son, Shri Manohar Lal Gulati. That family tradition still shapes how we bake today. Everything we make is 100% vegetarian and eggless, and we bake it with the same care you'd put into food for your own family.
Lots of Abbotsford homes cook two ways in the same week. Burgers one night, chole with kulcha the next. Below, you'll see each bread and bun we bake and what it's best for. Then you can open its own page for more detail before you come in.

View moreBurger, Sub & Kaiser Buns Suit Everyday Meals
It's Friday night, the grill's warming up, and you need buns that won't fall apart halfway through dinner. That's the job these sandwich buns are made for.
Each one has its own shape. Burger buns are round and soft, sized to hold a veggie patty and all your toppings. Sub buns are long, built for deli-style sandwiches packed with cheese, lettuce, peppers, and sauce. Kaiser buns have a firmer top and a soft middle, so they're great for bigger, heavier sandwiches.
Don't mix these up with pav buns. Burger, sub and Kaiser buns are Western-style sandwich buns. They're larger and firmer, and they're made to hold a filling inside. Pav buns are small, soft dinner rolls meant to sit beside a dish, not wrap around one.
Families in Abbotsford pick up these buns for school lunches and backyard barbecues. Caterers and small restaurants use them too, since a sturdy bun keeps a sandwich together through a busy lunch rush.
Truth is, the bun is the part of a sandwich people think about least, and it's the part that decides whether the whole thing holds up. You can see more about sizes and uses on our Burger, Sub & Kaiser Buns page.
Whole Wheat Bread Covers Daily Baking Needs
Whole wheat bread is a single-grain loaf made with whole wheat flour, with no added seeds or mixed grains. It's simple. That's the whole point.
This is the loaf a lot of households reach for every single day. It slices evenly, holds a sandwich filling well, and toasts up nicely in the morning. On a cold, rainy Abbotsford evening, a warm slice next to a bowl of soup feels just right.
It's easy to mix up whole wheat bread and multigrain and flaxseed bread on the shelf. Here's the difference. Whole wheat bread sticks to one grain. Multigrain and flaxseed bread blends several grains and seeds, so it has a chewier texture and a different fiber profile. If you like a plain, smooth slice with no bits of seed, whole wheat bread is your loaf.
Here are a few everyday ways families use our whole wheat bread:
- Packed sandwiches for school and work
- Morning toast with butter or jam
- A side for dal, soup, or sabzi
- A quick after-school snack for the kids
We bake our whole wheat bread fresh, so it tastes the way homemade bread should. Find out more on our Whole Wheat Bread page.
White & Sesame Bread Rounds Out the Bread Shelf
Do you want a soft, classic loaf, or something with a little crunch on top? With our white and sesame bread, you get to choose.
Our plain white bread is soft and light, with a gentle flavor that kids tend to love. It's the loaf for grilled cheese, bread pakora, and simple jam sandwiches. It's also the bread a lot of us grew up with, so it brings a bit of comfort to the table.
The sesame version starts with that same soft white bread and adds sesame seeds on top. The seeds toast while the loaf bakes. That gives every slice a light, nutty taste and a nice bit of texture without making the bread heavy.
Plenty of families keep both loaves in the kitchen. White for the kids' lunchboxes, sesame for the grown-ups' toast.
White and sesame bread works for everyday meals, but it's also handy when family's visiting and you want a fresh loaf ready for breakfast. We bake both kinds fresh at our Cedar Lane shop, so you can pick up whichever one suits your week. Read more on our White & Sesame Bread page.
Garlic Bread Adds a Savory Side Option
Some meals just need something warm and savory on the side. Our garlic bread fills that spot.
We start with fresh-baked bread and finish it with garlic. All you need to do at home is warm it up. The outside gets a little crisp, the inside stays soft, and your kitchen smells wonderful while it heats.
Garlic bread goes with a lot more than pasta. It's great next to a big pot of soup on a wet winter night, and it's an easy add to a salad dinner. It also works well for shared meals. Bring a loaf to a potluck or a family get-together, slice it up, and it'll be gone before you know it.
It's a nice shortcut for busy cooks, too. You get a homemade feel without mixing garlic butter or toasting bread yourself. That leaves more time for the main dish, or for sitting down with the people you're feeding.
If you're hosting a small gathering in Abbotsford, garlic bread is one of the simplest ways to round out the table. Learn more on our Garlic Bread page.
Planning a cookout to go with it? Check out our Burger, Sub & Kaiser Buns page for details on sizes and uses.
Kulcha Buns Bring a Traditional Indian Staple
Abbotsford has one of the largest Punjabi-Canadian communities in BC. That means a lot of homes here want kulcha on the table, and not just on special days. Our kulcha buns are baked for exactly that kind of everyday meal.
A kulcha bun is a soft, leavened Indian bread. It's plain and gently flavored, so it lets your food be the star. Tear it open and use it to scoop up chole, dal, or any sabzi you've made for dinner. It's also lovely warmed on a tawa with a little butter.
Kulcha buns are different from our methi buns (methi kulcha). Kulcha buns are plain. Methi kulcha adds fenugreek leaves to the dough, which gives it a stronger flavor and makes it more of a snack. If you want a side bread for a full meal, kulcha buns are the one to grab.
A good kulcha should be soft enough to tear by hand and plain enough to let the curry shine.
Our family's baking started in Punjab, so kulcha feels close to our hearts. We bake them fresh, the way they've always been made in our tradition. See more on our Kulcha Buns page.
Pav Buns Pair With Classic Indian Dishes
Pav bhaji is only as good as the pav you serve it with. Ask anyone who grew up eating it.
Pav buns are soft, slightly sweet dinner rolls. They're baked side by side in a tray, so they pull apart easily, and each one has soft sides. Home cooks use them with pav bhaji, vada pav, and misal pav, or as a side for any saucy dish that needs something to soak it up.
Here's what to look for in a good pav bun:
- A soft, fluffy inside that soaks up bhaji
- A light sweetness that balances spicy food
- Easy to pull apart from the tray
- Toasts well on a tawa with butter
Pav buns aren't the same as our burger, sub and Kaiser buns. Pav buns are softer, smaller, and sweeter. They're made to pair with a dish, while those sandwich buns are made to hold a sandwich together.
Pav buns are a favorite when family comes over or when you're feeding a crowd at a get-together. Learn more on our Pav Buns page.
Methi Buns (Methi Kulcha) Offer a Flavorful Snack
Take a plain kulcha, mix fenugreek leaves into the dough, and you've got our methi buns (methi kulcha). That one change makes a big difference in taste.
Fenugreek, or methi, has a warm, slightly bitter, savory flavor that a lot of Punjabi families know from home cooking. Baked into soft kulcha dough, it turns a simple bun into something you'll want to eat on its own.
That's the main difference from our kulcha buns. Plain kulcha buns are an everyday side bread for curries and dal. Methi buns (methi kulcha) have more flavor of their own, so people often enjoy them as a standalone snack instead of a side.
A favorite way to eat them is with a hot cup of chai in the afternoon. Warm one up, sit down for a few minutes, and you've got a little tea-time break that tastes like home. They're also nice to put out when guests drop by, since they don't need anything else on the plate.
We bake methi buns (methi kulcha) fresh with the same family care we put into all our kulcha. Read more on our Methi Buns (Methi Kulcha) page.
Multigrain & Flaxseed Bread Supports Health-Focused Baking
A lot of people think every multigrain loaf is automatically the diet choice. It's not quite that simple. How a multigrain bread fits your eating depends on the grains and seeds in the blend.
Our multigrain and flaxseed bread mixes several grains with flaxseed. The result is a hearty loaf with a nutty taste and a chewier bite than plain wheat bread. You'll see little seeds and grains in every slice, and it toasts up with a nice crunch around the edges.
Here's how it's different from whole wheat bread. Whole wheat bread sticks to a single grain. Multigrain and flaxseed bread adds extra grains and flaxseed, so the texture and fiber profile change. Health-conscious shoppers often pick it for that grain-and-seed mix.
Our honest advice is to pick the loaf you enjoy eating. That's the one you'll finish.
Multigrain and flaxseed bread makes a filling breakfast toast and a sturdy sandwich for a long workday. It also pairs well with soup when the Fraser Valley rain sets in. Find out more on our Multigrain & Flaxseed Bread page.
Sweet Buns Round Out the Bun Selection
Garlic bread is a savory side for dinner. Sweet buns go the other way. They're a soft, lightly sweet treat, closer to a snack than a side dish.
Our sweet buns are baked fresh with a fluffy inside and a gentle sweetness. They aren't heavy or sugary. They're just sweet enough to feel like a little something special.
Most families enjoy them in one of a few ways. Some eat them at breakfast with butter. Others save them for the afternoon, when a warm cup of chai and a sweet bun feel like the best part of the day. They also tuck nicely into a lunchbox.
There's something about a sweet bun with tea that brings people to the table.
Sweet buns are handy to have around when relatives drop in or when the kids come home hungry. You can set out a plate without any fuss, and everyone finds one they like. We bake them with the same family tradition that goes into everything on our shelves here in Abbotsford. See more on our Sweet Buns page.
Pizza Shells Give Home Cooks a Ready Base
Making pizza from scratch means mixing dough, waiting for it to rise, and rolling it out. Our pizza shells skip all of that.
A pizza shell is a par-baked base. It's partly baked here at the bakery, so it's ready for toppings the moment you get home. It's not the same as fresh pizza dough. A par-baked shell is already shaped and holds firm, so it's easier to handle and quicker to finish in your oven.
Using one is simple:
- Spread on your favorite sauce
- Add cheese and veggie toppings like peppers, onions, mushrooms, or paneer
- Bake until the cheese melts and the edges turn golden
- Slice and serve
Home cooks love pizza shells for family pizza nights and kids' parties, since everyone can build their own. Small food businesses use them too when they want a steady base without making dough every day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Bakery in Abbotsford
How do I choose between burger buns and kulcha or pav buns?
It depends on your meal. Burger, sub, and Kaiser buns are Western-style and built to hold a filling inside, like a patty or deli meat. Kulcha and pav buns are smaller, softer rolls meant to sit beside a dish, like chole or pav bhaji. Think about what you're serving before you pick your bread.
What's the difference between whole wheat bread and multigrain bread?
Whole wheat bread uses one grain, so it has a smooth, plain texture that's easy to slice. Multigrain and flaxseed bread blends several grains and seeds, giving it a chewier bite and different fiber content. If you want a simple everyday loaf, go whole wheat. If you want more texture, try multigrain.
Do you bake fresh bread every day in Abbotsford?
Yes, we bake fresh daily at our Cedar Lane shop in Abbotsford. That's why we suggest calling ahead or stopping by to ask what's fresh that day. Fresh batches mean better taste and texture, especially for breads like garlic bread that are best served warm.
Is everything at Manohar Vegetarian Bakery vegetarian?
Yes, everything we bake is 100% vegetarian and eggless. This comes from our family tradition, started by Shri Harichand Gulati in Ferozepur, Punjab. Whether you're picking up sandwich bread or kulcha, you can count on every item meeting the same vegetarian standard.
Why does Abbotsford have such strong demand for kulcha and pav buns?
Abbotsford has one of the largest Punjabi-Canadian communities in BC, so many households cook traditional dishes regularly. That means steady demand for kulcha and pav buns alongside everyday sandwich bread. It's common for one Abbotsford kitchen to need both Western buns and Indian staples in the same week.
Can I order a custom cake from a bakery in Abbotsford?
Many Abbotsford bakeries, including ours, take custom orders, but it's best to call ahead and ask directly. Availability and lead time can depend on the type of bread or baked good you need. A quick phone call to Cedar Lane will tell you what's possible for your event.
